There are several alternatives to baking powder that can be used as leavening agents in baking recipes.
1. Baking Soda and Cream of Tartar: Baking soda and cream of tartar can be used as a substitute for baking powder when combined in a 2:1 ratio. For example, for every 1 teaspoon of baking powder called for in a recipe, substitute 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar.
2. Buttermilk: Buttermilk is acidic, which makes it an ideal alternative to baking powder and baking soda. Use 1 cup of buttermilk to replace 1 teaspoon of baking powder.
3. Yogurt & Milk: The combination of yogurt and milk can replace baking powder in most recipes. For each teaspoon of baking powder called for, mix together 1/4 cup of yogurt with 1/4 cup of milk.
4. Self-Rising Flour: Self-rising flour already contains baking powder as one of its ingredients and can be used as a substitute for baking powder in many recipes. Substitute self-rising flour in place of all-purpose flour, and omit the baking powder from the recipe.
5. Sourdough Starter: Sourdough starter is a fermented mixture of flour and water and is acidic like buttermilk. For every teaspoon of baking powder, add 1 cup of sourdough starter to the recipe.
How do you make organic baking powder?
Making your own organic baking powder is surprisingly simple. All you need is two ingredients: baking soda and cream of tartar.
The most common ratio is 1 part baking soda to 2 parts cream of tartar. For example, if you are making 1/4 cup of baking powder, you will need 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar.
Mix the two together in a bowl and then sift the mixture into a jar. Make sure to label the jar so you know what it is.
Organic baking powder can be used in place of store-bought baking powder in any recipe. It will add a light and airy texture to your baked goods and help them rise.
