Why is ketchup not vegan?
While ketchup is not made from animal products, many vegans consider it non-vegan-friendly because the sugar in it is filtered and bleached using animal bone char.
Heating cow bones to a high temperature until they break down into carbon creates bone char or activated carbon, which is used to filter and bleach sugar.
Vegans who are concerned about consuming products that have been filtered and bleached using animal bone char can look for ketchup brands that use plant-based alternatives or make their own ketchup at home.
