What Are Fritos?
Fritos are a type of snack food made from corn that has been fried and then formed into a small, individual-sized shape. The Fritos brand was first introduced by the Frito-Lay Company in 1932 and it has been a popular snack food ever since. Fritos come in a variety of flavors and can be eaten either straight out of the bag or incorporated into dishes such as chili. Recently, people have been asking the question: are Fritos a delicious vegan snack?
What Does it Mean to Be Vegan?
In order to answer the question of whether or not Fritos are a vegan snack, it’s important to first understand what it means to be vegan. Being vegan simply means a person does not consume any animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, honey, and even some types of sugar which can be processed with bone char. In addition to not consuming animal products, vegans often avoid using animal-derived products like leather, fur, and wool.
Are Fritos a Deliciously Vegan Snack?
The answer to the question of whether Fritos are vegan depends on the type of Fritos being purchased. The plain Fritos corn chips are considered vegan because they don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients. However, some of the other flavors of Fritos such as barbecue, sour cream and onion, and chili cheese do contain dairy and other animal-derived ingredients which make them not vegan-friendly.
What Are the Ingredients of Fritos?
The main ingredients of plain Fritos corn chips are corn, sunflower oil or corn oil, salt, and a small amount of tomato powder. The rest of the ingredients used in Fritos products depend on the flavor being purchased. For instance, the barbecue flavor of Fritos contains wheat, milk, and other dairy-derived ingredients. The chili cheese flavor of Fritos contains whey and other dairy-derived ingredients as well.
Are There Other Vegan-Friendly Fritos Options?
Fortunately, Frito-Lay has created a few vegan-friendly Fritos options that are made with plant-based ingredients. The Fritos Spicy Sweet Chili flavor only contains plant-based ingredients, so it is vegan. In addition, the Fritos Roasted Garlic and Herb flavor is vegan-friendly and it’s made with a variety of herbs and spices.
Are Fritos a Healthy Snack?
Although Fritos may be vegan-friendly, it doesn’t necessarily make them a healthy snack. Fritos are high in fat, sodium, and calories and they are also processed and contain preservatives. Therefore, it’s best to consume Fritos in moderation and to balance them out with other snacks that are healthier for you.
Are Fritos Gluten-Free?
Most Fritos products do contain wheat, which is a form of gluten. Therefore, Fritos are not gluten-free. However, Fritos has introduced a new line of gluten-free products called Fritos Fritos Flamin’ Hot Gluten-Free Corn Chips. This product is made with corn, sunflower oil, salt, and other spices, so it is gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
Are Fritos GMO-Free?
Frito-Lay has recently made the commitment to source all of the ingredients used in their products from non-GMO sources by the end of 2020. Until then, Fritos products do contain GMO ingredients, so they are not considered a GMO-free product.
In conclusion, traditional Fritos products are vegan-friendly due to the fact that they only contain plant-based ingredients. However, some of the flavored Fritos products do contain dairy-derived ingredients which make them not vegan-friendly. Additionally, Fritos are high in fat, sodium, and calories, so it’s best to consume them in moderation. Frito-Lay has also introduced some vegan-friendly and gluten-free Fritos products, so it’s worth checking those out if you’re looking for a vegan and gluten-free snack. Finally, Fritos do contain GMO ingredients right now, but Frito-Lay is in the process of transitioning to non-GMO ingredients.
I’m Brooke, and I love being vegan. I know all there is to know about the vegan lifestyle, and I love sharing that knowledge with others.
I own a vegan restaurant in Boston, and I love helping people make the switch to a plant-based diet. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it!
